What does a breast lift involve?

A breast lift or mastopexy is a much sought-after cosmetic procedure. It is ideal for women whose breasts have lost their shape and firmness after pregnancy, through weight loss and/or due to age. During the consultation with the plastic surgeon, it will become clear which lift you are eligible for. This procedure can be perfectly combined with breast implants/breast enlargement to give your breasts more volume after the lift as well.

Breast lift: the procedure

A breast lift is mainly carried out on women who have sagging breasts due to childbirth, weight loss or simply old age. This often results in a deep fold and the nipple is positioned lower than the breast fold.

In the case of a breast lift, the excess skin is removed to achieve a lifting effect. The technique used and the surgeon's expertise ensure the most suitable shape for your body type and according to your wishes.

At the Wellness Kliniek, we offer several types of breast lift operations. The technique used depends on how much your breasts are sagging, the elasticity and thickness of the skin, as well as the desired volume you want to achieve. The surgeon will discuss the best options in detail during the consultation.

Types of breast lift

Mini-breast lift

A mini-breast lift, in which we technically distinguish between the doughnut lift and the lollipop lift, is suitable for slightly to moderately sagging breasts. In the case of slightly sagging breasts, the doughnut lift is chosen, with a minimal incision being made around the areola. For moderately sagging breasts, a lollipop lift is a common technique. In addition to the incision around the areola, an incision is also made in the vertical direction towards the inframammary fold.

Total breast lift

A full or total breast lift is suitable for women whose breasts are sagging to a greater degree. This procedure continues the lollipop lift with an additional incision in the inframammary fold. The result is an anchor-shaped scar. The thin scars fade after 6 to 18 months and become less visible thereafter.

Breast lift versus breast reduction

In essence, the same technique is used for a total breast lift and a breast reduction. The difference with a breast reduction is the dissection (removal) of fat and/or breast glands to reduce the volume of the breasts. In the case of a breast lift, on the other hand, the surgeon only removes the excess skin to maintain the volume of the breasts.

Breast lift with implants

Over the years, breasts often not only sag but their volume may also decrease. This gives the impression of empty breasts. If you are also looking for that little bit of extra volume, a breast lift can be perfectly combined with a breast enlargement with implants. Whether both operations can be done at the same time or must be done separately, will be discussed by the doctor during the consultation.

The result of a breast lift

The result is already visible after one month. However, recovery after a breast lift is considerably longer than for a breast enlargement. It can take up to 18 months before the final result is achieved. Still, it’s definitely worth it!

The doctors and nurses at the Wellness Kliniek will provide you with a personalised recovery programme, adapted to achieve the desired results as quickly as possible and to speed up the healing process.
