Are you a Suitable Candidate For Breast Implant Surgery?

Breast implants do create a fuller silhouette but do not repair sagging and droopiness. In certain situations, a breast augmentation can still improve the look of your breasts. If your breasts have what we call a grade 1 level of sagging, breast implants may be able to create your desired outcome. In cases like this, we suggest opting for implants with a breast lift.

Here are some candidates guidelines.

  • Anyone under the age of 18 is not a suitable candidate because women’s breasts continue to develop into their 20s.
  • We only consider patients that are in decent physical condition. When patients exercise regularly and consume the right nutrients they have a better post-operation outcome.
  • Women who are either pregnant or breastfeeding should not have breast implants because they can disrupt milk ducts.
  • You are a suitable candidate for breast augmentation surgery when your breast and nipple are positioned above the breast fold.
  • We can only perform the surgery six weeks after breastfeeding has stopped.
  • Anyone who is fighting infection is not a suitable candidate for implant surgery.

grades of sagging breast

If your breasts have a grade 1 (or higher) grade of sagging, a breast augmentation could still be an option. However, you might have to consider having a breast lift after your implant surgery.

Types of Implants

Silicone Breast Implants

Most women choose silicone for natural-looking breast implants. Silicone implants are soft to the touch, which is why many patients report that their silicone implant feels like real breast tissue. For this reason, silicone gel is more expensive than the other alternatives on the market. Whether you want small implants or 500cc implants, silicone can provide you with a natural, full look.

Silicone implants have a strong, reliable shell that is filled with a solid silicone mass.  Unlike the other materials we offer, silicone breast implants have a semisolid state. This means that they will change shape when handled and will return to their original state within seconds.

One of the main benefits of choosing silicone implants is that they do not immediately leak if the shell ruptures. Some women are wary of silicone implants because ruptures are difficult to spot. When ruptures happen, the gel drains slowly. Silicone gel is not compatible with the human body, which means that the implant needs to be removed immediately.

Hydrogel Breast Implants

Hydrogel breast implants have been around for more than 30 years. Hydrogel is a biomaterial that is created using naturally occurring proteins that are commonly found in the body. The implant is coated in tissue that is comparable to breast tissue in texture and appearance.

Hydrogel implants are part of the push towards natural biomaterials instead of synthetic materials like silicone. At Wellness Kliniek, we use Monobloc Hydrogel implants because they are of high quality and reliable. Women choose hydrogel implants when they want a natural look and feel.

Saline Breast Implants

Saline breast implants come with an outer shell that is made of silicone. The shell is inserted into the breast while it is empty. Once inserted, surgeons fill the shell with sterile salt water. Women who want small, unobtrusive incisions choose saline implants.

Unlike silicone implants, when saline implants rupture there is no need for emergency surgery. Because the human body is over 70% saline (saltwater), saline leaks do not pose a serious threat to life. Saline will drain out of the implant quickly, which means that you will always notice a rupture.

We do not recommend saline breast implants for women who have little breast tissue. Women who have little breast tissue are at higher risk of experiencing what is called a saline implant ripple. The ripple effect looks akin to how the surface of water looks when immense winds travel across it. Poor practices like not filling the silicone shell properly can cause the ripple effect.

Size and Profile of Breast Implants: Low, Medium, High, Extra High

Breast implant sizes are most commonly measured by volume in cubic centimetres (cc) and by the profile. Most manufactures create 4 different breast implant profiles: low, medium, high, and extra high.

Breast Implant Profiles

The base (diameter) of the implant becomes smaller as the profile increases.

Choosing the right width and height is as important as the actual volume of the implant. During the consultation, your surgeon will assist you in finding the best choice to achieve your desired outcome.

Textures of Breast Implants: Smooth, Textured, Micro Texture

In the last few decades, breast implant manufacturers realised that the texture of implants has an impact on their behaviour and the aesthetic result.

Smooth implants have a thinner surface than other implants. As a result, they feel more natural than textured implant shells. Patients report that these implants feel smooth and soft. Because of the lack of texture on these implants, they can move more freely. They are more likely to rupture and rip, and in some cases can migrate and flip upside down.

Textured implants are thick and rough and feel firmer. The textured surface locks the implant into place and allows for little to no movement. This means that patients who choose textured implants do not have to worry about them moving, migrating, or flipping. We recommend these implants for women who have larger implants as they are less likely to rip. Some patients report that textured implants feel unnatural when lying down.

It is important to note that textured implants have been linked to anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL), an uncommon cancer that originates in the immune system and affects 1 in 500,000 patients.

In the early 2000s,  breast implant manufacturers set out to combine the best of both smooth and textured implants. The micro-textured implant was born. This implant has a softer, more natural feel yet it does not allow for free movement. It has proven itself to be the most reliable and best-suited implant for most patients.

Most Common Brands of Breast Implants: Marion, Motiva, Mentor, Natrelle

Arion’s French-made Monobloc SoftOne are the go-to choice for most patients at Wellness Kliniek. They play a vital role in the MIBIS technique. For an implant to fit through a 2-3cm incision, it needs to be very elastic, retain its shape, and be resistant to ruptures. Arion implants are one of the best choices for women who value safety and a soft, natural feel.

Motiva implants by Establishment Labs are one of the most recent newcomers to the high-end implant market. This Costa Rican company has gained popularity worldwide. Their implants are more firm and rigid than Arion implants, which is why we do not recommend them for women who want the MIBIS technique. We recommend these implants for women who want a large breast enhancement.

Mentor and Natrelle are the two largest implant manufacturers in the world. They are owned by two giant pharmaceutical companies and each has a strong RnD team. Both brands have a wide range of cosmetic and reconstructive implants. Thanks to their immense supply chain, they can provide great quality implants at competitive prices.

Breast Implant Shapes

Teardrop Implants (Anatomical)

Here are the main characteristics of teardrop breast implants.

  • Natural-looking breast shape
  • Filled with form-stable gel
  • Tailored to each patient
  • Contain a form-stable gel
  • Weigh on average 20% less than round implants with the same width

Teardrop breast implants are also called anatomical implants. As the name suggests, this type of implant has a flatter upper half and a fuller bottom half. These natural-looking breast implants are perfect for women who need reconstructive surgery. They are also a popular choice for women with asymmetrical and tubular breasts.

Round Implants

These are the main characteristics of round breast implants.

  • Symmetrical
  • Contain liquid gel
  • Aesthetically pleasing

Round breast implants are the most popular choice for women all over the world. Round implants have a shell that contains either silicone gel or saline. Unlike form-stable teardrop implants, the material inside round implants moves freely. They are softer and more natural to touch than hard, anatomical implants.

The placement of the implant dictates what sort of outcome patients can expect. By taking a submuscular approach, our surgeons can create a natural-looking breast enhancement. One of the benefits of choosing round breast implants over anatomical implants is that they are entirely symmetrical. If teardrop implants rotate they will create an asymmetrical shape whereas round implants will always maintain their symmetrical appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I choose my future bra size?
You explain to the surgeon what size you would like your breasts to be. At the intake consultation you tell the surgeon what you want. The surgeon then calculates the volume, the shape and the projection. The surgeon determines the shape of the implant and calculates the volume. Not just the shape and volume are important but the profile (projection) of the implant all determine the end result. Silicone prostheses are available in: round low profile, round high pofile, round extra high profile, anatomical and tear-drop shaped.
Can I choose the size of my breast implants?
Yes. The consultant surgeon will examine you during the consultation to help you decide the size and shape, in order to give you the optimum result you wish for.
Which implant is best for me?
In consultation with your plastic surgeon, you determine which Monobloc Silicone SoftOne implant, in terms of shape, profile and volume will give the best results for you. We take your body shape and your wishes into account. You choose the shape and volume yourself.
Which implants are most suitable?
Liquid silicone leakage is a much-debated issue. Although scientific studies show that it poses no danger to your health, surgeons at the Wellness Kliniek prefer to opt for non-liquid, high-cohesive gel implants. Due to the high-cohesive silicone filling the content does not leak. With this type of implant the risk of leakage is therefore virtually excluded.
Do anatomical or tear-drop shaped implants give a more natural end result?
Anatomical and tear-drop shaped implants are sometimes desirable if you just need 1 breast implant. The disadvantage of tear-drop shaped and anatomical implants is that their centre of gravity is low which means that the breasts could become saggy over time. Our extensive experience has shown that the best shape can be achieved with round implants. You don't see the round shape under the skin or breast tissue and it ensures the most natural base. Dependng on your preference you can choose from a low, high or extra high projection.
Are silicone implants really safe?
It has never been scientifically proven that silicone breast implants cause breast cancer, rheumatism or immunity disorders. It is true that the prostheses used to be filled with a liquid silicone gel. If there is a tear in the implant's shell then the gel could leak out and spread into the body. Fortunately this was in the past!Modern silicone implants have a strong silicone wall and are filled with a firm silicone mass. If there is a tear in the wall the solid gel doesn't leak into the body.
Where will the implant be placed?
Location of the breast implant: - the pocket - is chosen with care. Each breast implant can either be implanted above or underneath the muscle. A mixed pocket (dual plane) usually gives the most beautiful results.
Do I need to wear a special bra after the treatment?
After the operation, it is important that you wear an unshaped bra, not an underwired bra, to properly distribute any pressure on the mammary gland and implant. You must wear this bra up to 6 weeks after the operation. You can purchase the special post-operative (sports) bra at the Wellness Kliniek.
When can I sunbathe again?
To achieve a beautiful end result it is important that you protect the scars from the sun or a sunbed. Apply a high protection factor suncream for the first 12 months.
How long before I can take a shower?
The wounds and the bandage must be kept dry until all the stitches have been removed. You can only take a full shower 3 weeks after your procedure. Make sure you dry yourself properly after showering and immediately put on your sports bra. You can take a bath 6 weeks after your procedure.
When will I be able to see the final result?
The healing process lasts at least 3-6 months. The final result will only be visible after this time.
How big are the scars?
A large incision is not necessary! Each prosthesis can be inserted through an incision measuring about 1.2 inch / 3 cm = Minimally Invasive Breast Implant Surgery. In consultation with the doctor, you determine yourself where the incision will be made: round the areola, in the fold under the breast or in the cavity of the armpit. A small incision round the areola or under the breast is the least visible in the long term, so that one can hardly tell that you have implants.
What can I expect? What is normal?
Muscle pain in the rib cage and in the back, pain and a burning or stabbing sensation in the wounds, swollen breasts, bruising and hematomas. You may feel more discomfort in one breast.
Can I still breastfeed after a breast enlargement?
Yes. After a breast enlargement you are still capable of breastfeeding.
Are yearly check-ups necessary?
No. High quality breast prostheses carry less risk of complications. As a result, unless otherwised specified by the surgeon, a routine yearly check-up is unnecessary. If you are going to have a mammography, don’t forget to mention that you have breast implants.
