Eyelid Correction

Eyes

Eyelid surgery, which is also known as blepharoplasty, corrects the skin and contours of the eyes. Removing excess skin and fat, or transposing fat from the lower eyelid, and adjusting the muscles of the eye contours will make you look younger and more rested. Suffice to say that this will always be based on a thorough prior analysis by your doctor.

Types of eyelid surgery

There are many possibilities for surgery on a person’s eyes. The types of eyelid surgery listed below are regularly performed at Wellness Kliniek. If you would like to know for a specific procedure whether it could be what you are looking for, please do not hesitate to contact us. Before you continue, take a look at a few eyelid surgery before and after pictures to get a good idea of the kinds of results you can expect.

If you are not familiar with some of the medical terms used in relation to eyelid surgery, here’s what they mean:

  • Blepharoplasty: medical term for eyelid surgery. ‘Blepharo’ means ‘eyelid’ and ‘plasty’ means ‘plastic surgery.’
  • Dermatochalasis: drooping eyelids caused by baggy skin, generally related to ageing.
  • Ptosis surgery: surgery of the upper eyelid.
  • Levatorplasty: commonly used surgical technique where the tendon leaf on the edge of the upper eyelid is stitched.
Upper eyelid surgery

Surgery of the upper eyelid means that we remove excess skin and fat. This way, the surgeon can bring out the shape of your eyes. The scar will be hidden in the crease of your eye and be barely visible after surgery. Upper eyelid surgery is one of the most commonly performed procedures.

Lower eyelid surgery

The skin under your eyes can start to droop or become thicker. When that happens, a surgeon can correct your lower eyelids. The incision will then be made just below the edge of the bottom eyelashes, meaning that scars will virtually be invisible afterwards.

While eyelid surgery under the eye is a minor procedure, it does require a high level of precision and experience. Our surgeons know exactly what they are doing and how to achieve the most natural result.

If you don’t have excess fat under your eyes, but skin has spread to the part between your eye and your nose, we will see if the Hamra technique may be a better choice for your eyes. With this procedure, we return the fat to below the eye, so as to reduce the dark lines under your eyes.

Upper and lower eyelid surgery

In some cases, both the upper and lower eyelid would benefit from surgery. Make sure you discuss all your concerns, wishes, and expectations with the doctor during the consultation. The doctor will inform you in great detail.

Eyebrow lift or eyelid surgery

Many people are not sure whether to go for upper eyelid surgery or an eyebrow lift. Or perhaps a combination of both. There is no universal answer to this question, as it differs from one person to the next.

If your eyelids have started to droop because your eyebrows have descended, an eyebrow lift will be the more likely recommendation. Always get personal advice, our cosmetic physicians will advise you on what would be the best option for you based on the specific features of your face.

Eyelid surgery pros and cons

From an aesthetic perspective, lifting eyelids is a good option if you want to enrich your vision. But this is not the only benefit of eyelid surgery. It will normally also revive your eyes and reduce the sensation of tired eyes. It will reduce the pressure you feel on your eyes. Perhaps you always had to force your eyes to open wide; this discomfort will be a thing of the past after an eye lift. It may even mean an end to your headaches.

Besides the benefits of eyelid surgery, there are also downsides, which we at Wellness Kliniek want to be transparent about. The most bothersome aspect to eyelid surgery is that it takes roughly two months for the result to appear. And the scar will only truly start to fade after around three months.

While eyelid surgery is a relatively simple procedure with a minimum chance of complications, you should still reckon with a rather long recovery period and will need good aftercare at home after the surgery. If this is not a problem for you, eyelid surgery can really improve your quality of life, both on an emotional and on a physical level.

Eyelid surgery for men and women

Eyelid surgery can be a godsend for both men and women. But can anyone undergo eyelid surgery? No, not anyone, because the procedure has to deliver a result and you need sufficient (loose or thickened) skin around your eyes to be able to undergo the surgery. That said, people generally have good reasons to consider this procedure and chances are that it will be possible. Therefore, we always recommend booking a no-obligation consultation for personal advice.

Want to have your eyes lifted? Eyelid surgery above your eyes, or under your eyes? An eyebrow upgrade? Lifting eyelids is one of Wellness Kliniek’s specialities. Using various techniques and with customised advice based on your eyes and face, we always aim for the most attractive result. And we always do that in the safest way possible, which goes without saying, so that you have nothing to worry about when it comes to the surgery itself. Go for that fresher look and make eyes at yourself again!

Who is eyelid surgery intended for?

Our bodies change over the years, including our facial skin. Our skin loses its elasticity and sometimes fat accumulates in the upper and lower eyelids. This will cause eyes to start to droop, which makes you look older and may even limit your field of vision.

In some cases, it is congenital and something you have been dealing with from a young age. The good news is that anyone who has this problem can have eyelid surgery. Your surgeon will sit down with you to assess if this is the best option for you. In some cases, a combination of different procedures is needed to get the best result.

Eyelid surgery: the procedure

Before the surgery, we take pictures of your face for your file. The surgeon will mark out on your eyelid where exactly skin or fat will be removed. Next, the surgeon will inject an anaesthetic with adrenalin (to counter bleeding).

As soon as the eye is numb, the surgeon will make an incision in the creases of your eyelids to remove loose skin, muscles, and fat.

If necessary, the surgeon will slightly shorten the orbicularis oculi or outer eye muscles and attach them to the bone tissue in the outer corner of the eye. This technique lifts up the outer corner of the eye somewhat.

Finally, the surgeon will suture the wound using an extremely fine surgical thread and apply bandage to the zone that was operated on. In some cases, the surgeon will use Tissucol, a surgical adhesive used to glue the skin together. An icepack is subsequently used to cool the area and soothe the pain after the procedure.

What to expect?

You can go home immediately after your eyelid surgery. However, you cannot drive yourself and you cannot be alone for the first 24 hours either, so it is important that you bring someone. If this is not possible in your case, you can book an overnight stay in a private room at the clinic.

Recovery after eyelid surgery: recovery will be optimal when all guidelines for aftercare are followed to the letter. You will be given a sheet with instructions to take home. The final result of the eyelid surgery will show roughly 2 months after the surgery. The scar will fade after about three months.
