Preparing for your operation

A few weeks before the operation

Plan in advance

  • Usually, you cannot return to work right away after your operation. So make sure you take some time off the first few days following the treatment, depending on the procedure. Also organise some help to look after the children and do household chores.
  • Ask your partner or a friend to accompany you to the Kliniek. It is important for your safety that someone stays with you the night following your treatment.
  • Don't forget about the check-up. It is sometimes necessary to return to the Kliniek after your operation for an additional check-up and/or to have stitches removed. If you live too far away the stitches can be removed by your general practitioner and/or home nurse.
  • You have informed your doctor about any medication you are taking. He/she may have advised you to temporarily stop taking blood thinners.
  • Try and stop or seriously reduce the amount you smoke, around two weeks before your treatment. Smoking has adverse effects on healing wounds.

Important! Your companion

  • It is important that when you check-in, you are accompanied by a responsible adult (minimum age 18). If not, the operation cannot be performed and you will be charged cancellation costs.
  • Make sure your companion comes to collect you. You cannot drive yourself home after the procedure.
  • It is important that you spend the first 24 hours after you arrive home with a responsible adult.

You have attended your consultation and have booked an appointment for an operation or next-day-surgery.

Your surgeon, together with your anaesthetist, will examine whether you are a suitable candidate for treatment.

  • If you are over fifty years of age, the anaesthetist will want you to have a blood test and ECG before the operation. You can simply ask your own general practitioner to perform these tests for you.
  • The doctor has run through the treatment agreement with you. You bring a signed copy with you on the day of your treatment.
  • If you are a Next-Day Surgery patient, the doctors will also have asked you to fill in a medical questionnaire and upload photos.

We can only confirm your appointment for the operation once all these conditions have been satisfied.

Your procedure can only be scheduled after we have received a complete booking.

The day of the operation

The day of your procedure you arrive at the Wellness Kliniek having fasted beforehand. You must not have eaten anything since midnight.

  • Bring all medication you are taking, or have recently taken, with you to the Wellness Kliniek. If you take daily medication (prescribed by a doctor) you can usually take it the morning of the operation.
  • Wear glasses instead of contact lenses or remove them before the operation.
  • If you wear dentures you may leave them in.
  • Wear comfortable clothes, such as a tracksuit, without any jewellery.
  • Remove all make-up from your face, eyes, lips and neck.
  • Remove nail varnish from both hands.
  • Do not wear any piercings.
  • Do not apply any body lotion (not even a little).
  • Do not wear any jewellery.

Bring the following with you:

  • Proof of your identity; this could be a passport or identity card.
  • Filled in medical questionnaire
  • Signed treatment agreement
  • Details of your health insurer and/or European health insurance card: This (free) card gives you access to necessary medical care in the Belgian public healthcare system.
  • A toiletry bag with toiletries, such as a toothbrush and toothpaste, comb/brush, shampoo, contact lens liquid and lens container, nail varnish and make-up remover, nail file or scissors.

Bear in mind that a day treatment may last a whole day and that you may not necessarily be treated at the agreed time.

Medical questionnaire

Before your operation we will send some patients a medical questionnaire by e-mail. You must accurately fill in this questionnaire. We request you print the document, take the time to complete it at home and bring it with you to the Wellness Kliniek the day of your treatment. We handle your information with the strictest confidentiality!

  • List all medication to which you are allergic.
  • You must inform us if you are an alcoholic or drug addict. You are not the only one and your secret will remain confidential, but for your safety your doctor must know which drugs you use and how often.
  • Try and stop or reduce the amount you smoke before and after your operation. This is important for your wounds to heal properly. Stop taking aspirin two weeks before the procedure. If you have been medically prescribed blood thinners, follow your doctor's instructions.
  • Do you have a contagious disease such as AIDS, HIV or Hepatitis? Inform us so that the operating team can take it into account.
  • Let us know if you suffer from diabetes or other condition that makes it difficult for you to go without any food and drink for a long time. We will make sure you are the first patient to be treated on the day of your procedure.
  • We will contact you a few days before your treatment. We will inform you what time you are expected at the Wellness Kliniek.
  • If you are coming for a next-day-surgery consultation during the intake consultation your doctor will provide you with all the information regarding how the day of your operation will be organised.
  • We will do our utmost to make your experience with us as agreeable as possible.
  • We are there to support you until you are fully recovered.

Private room

If you want privacy during the day of your treatment, it is best to book a private room with en-suite bathroom.

Overnight stay

It is usually unnecessary for you to also book an expensive overnight stay in the Kliniek after a day treatment. However, you must spend the night following your treatment with a responsible adult. If you are bringing a companion it is best to book a hotel room for two persons close to the Kliniek.

Payment of the remaining amount

You can pay the remaining amount up to the day itself*. We require your full, confirmed payment before the procedure. The reservation cost is deducted from the total cost of your procedure. Your treatment can only take place after we have received the full amount due for your treatment.

Payment options:

  • Online via the website: You can quickly, safely and easily pay the remaining amount for your procedure via our 'Online Reservation' on our website.
  • By bank transfer
Important! If you would like to pay the remaining amount by bank transfer, we ask that you transfer the full amount to the Wellness Kliniek's bank account at least 14 days before your procedure. This is so that the bank and the Kliniek's administrative services have enough time to process and verify the payment.
IBAN: BE03 4530 2988 5184 (BIC: KRED BE BB) specifying the patient's name + the desired date of the operation.
  • Cash on the day of your operation
Important! In accordance with Belgian law, we can only accept 10% of the total amount of the procedure in cash, if the total price of the procedure including VAT is higher than EUR 2,999.
  • Visa, MasterCard, Bancontact or Maestro
Important! Your bank may apply a daily spending limit! If, for one reason or another, the payment cannot be made, the operation or treatment cannot take place and cancellation costs will apply.

*Exception: For procedures involving specific implants, hair transplants and stomach operations we require full payment at least 14 days before your procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does fasting mean?
Fasting means that you may not eat or drink anything for eight hours before the operation. An empty stomach prevents any stomach contents from entering the windpipe or the lungs during the operation. If you have eaten or drunk something by mistake within the eight hours before the operation, let us know. It is extremely important that the anaesthetist takes this into consideration.
  • When will I be expected to arrive at the Wellness Kliniek?
On the day of your procedure you report to the reception desk at the agreed time.
  • How will I get back to my hotel?
If you don't need to stay in the Kliniek after the operation, make the necessary transport, support and hotel arrangements in plenty of time. You cannot drive yourself back home or to your hotel after the operation. Also make sure you do not spend the night after the operation alone.
  • Why do I need a companion?
It is for your own safety. You could unexpectedly feel faint after a procedure. It is important that someone is with you.
  • Does my companion also have to bring me to the Kliniek?
Yes. Our doctors want to be assured of your safety. So report to the reception desk accompanied by your companion, who must come and collect you after your procedure. This is important, otherwise the operation cannot be performed. You may not return home alone after the procedure. Your companion must be a responsible adult over 18 years of age.
  • Are visits allowed?
Your companion may accompany you to your room and collect you at the end of the day. To ensure your stay is calm and agreeable we ask that you only bring one companion and leave your children at home or arrange childcare. If you have a private room one extra person may visit you between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m.
  • What do I need to bring?
We supply towels, a bathrobe and slippers. For the rest, pack whatever you'd like to bring with you. Think about how you'd like to pass the time before and after the operation: a puzzle book, laptop or smartphone?
  • Can you look after my jewellery?
No. It is unwise to bring money, securities or jewellery with you. There is space for storing your personal belongings in your own cupboard in the department. However, these cupboards cannot be locked, so it is unwise to bring valuable items with you. The Wellness Kliniek is not liable for any losses.
  • Can I access the Internet at the Wellness Kliniek?
Of course! We provide free Wi-Fi.
