Facts and Myths about Liposuction

Liposuction, or liposculpture, is the second-most popular procedure at the Wellness Kliniek. In fact, last year, we removed more than 5000 litres of fat. It is a highly effective procedure that produces remarkable results. We do not just remove fat, we also use it to give your body the desired shape.

Liposuction is NOT a weight loss programme

Unfortunately, it just isn’t. A single litre of fat weighs about 800 grams. Our average liposuction procedure removes about 3 litres of fat, which is just shy of 2.5 kilos.

Liposuction should be regarded as a body-contouring procedure where the surgeon redefines the shape of the body.

Apologies: this is often a tough pill to swallow.

Liposuction fat does NOT grow back

Fat consists of cells. There are a finite number of fat cells. A larger person may not necessarily have more fat cells than a skinnier person. However, cells grow and shrink with weight gain or loss. Liposuction removes fat cells completely. The fat cells can’t grow back or reappear anywhere in the body.

On the other hand, liposuction does not prevent the cells left behind from growing when weight is gained. If you overeat, fat will return, but it will be distributed differently and, most likely, stored in other areas of your body. By following a healthy diet and exercising regularly, you can maintain your new weight and shape whilst preventing future weight gain.

Liposuction is NOT always performed under local anaesthesia

In fact, it is rarely performed under local anaesthesia in clinics that have general anaesthesia capabilities. It is much more comfortable and safer for the patient to go under anaesthesia. Furthermore, the surgeon can go into more detail when the patient remains in a fully relaxed position under anaesthesia.

Liposuction is NOT painful

It is generally considered the least painful surgery in the cosmetic surgery range. This still does not mean it’s totally painless. The level of discomfort is usually related to the number of areas covered and can be compared to muscle aches after a heavy workout.

Liposuction is NOT only for women

However, men tend to receive it less because most men have fat reserves under the muscles and between the organs. With liposuction, we can only reach fat deposits between skin and muscle. The most popular liposuction areas for men are love handles, breasts and double chins.

Liposuction is scarless

Liposuction scars are very difficult to spot. The incisions are tiny and strategically placed so that they disappear entirely over time.

Non-surgical liposuction is NOT liposuction

There may be non-surgical treatments that provide decent results, but they often require multiple treatments and will never achieve the same result as literally removing the fat from the body. Liposuction only requires one treatment and  has more predictable results as the surgeon can precisely target the areas of fat to be removed.
