Facelift or peeling?

Aging is a biological process . We all know that it is accelerated by UV rays, sunbeds, smoking, incorrect use of make-up or inadequate hydration of the skin. Fortunately the plastic surgeon can help. 

Facial aging has three aspects:

• Sagging skin and muscles;
• loss of elasticity of the skin;
• thinning of the skin as a result of insufficient subcutaneous fat.

These three symptoms of aging can't be solved with one single procedure. A facelift is still the best treatment for tissue sagging. Deep wrinkles, folds and grooves in the skin on the face and neck disappear when a facelift is performed. The quick mini-lift or MACS facelift, a less common procedure is ideal for patients who only want the middle of the face and contour of the jaw corrected.

Skin Resurfacing

Wrinkles and loss of elasticity especially around the eyes and mouth, leave the skin with a dull, unhealthy appearance. There are several resurfacing methods to correct this form of skin damage: laser, mechanical dermabrasion or chemical peeling.

The best approach is to treat the whole face. Deep peelings used on only crows' feet or wrinkles on the upper lip often result in colour difference with the untreated part of the face.

Laser or Tel Aviv mask?

Bio-chemical research performed in Isreal has developed a skin peeling treatment based on Phenol.A special patented buffer ensures that the Phenol is neutralised, which means it stops working, as it reaches the reticular dermis.

As opposed to the laser method, this method recognizes the different levels of the epidermis whch vary on different parts of the face.

The epidermis around the nose is much thicker than that around the eyes. The depth of the epidermis also differs on other parts of the face. The Tel-Aviv mask peels exactly down to the reticular dermis. Therefore, the epidermis is eliminated with utmost precision, providing uniform results nd prevents burns, scarring and discolouration.

Other peeling methods can result in complications such as irregularities, discolouration and burns. This is because the peeling is often too deep or not deep enough. With the laser method the specialist determines the depth of treatment but can never be as precise as the Tel Aviv buffer. With the laser the results are always dependent upon the skill and experience of the specialist, and even with the most experienced specialist complications still occur far too often.

The method: Over a two day hospital stay four masks are applied. The first day you receive two treatments - a peeling mask and a zinc oxide plaster mask.

On the second day the third and fourth masks are applied. The fourth, the so-called powder mask is applied after the actual peeling. The powder mask hardens and looks like stone. It has to stay on the face for 7 days, and is removed on the eighth day. The face is red and a little swollen but all wrinkles and irregularities are gone.

On the tenth day the face is not completely recovered but with a bit of camouflage make-up you can venture out. During the summer months we advise you to use a good sunscreen with a high protection factor.
