General anesthetic or intravenous sedation?
A facelift can be performed with intravenous sedation!
At the Wellness Kliniek we work with modern pain management techniques. This means that you experience a minimum of inconvenience right after your procedure as well as during the next few days. You can opt for a local anaesthetic, intravenous sedation or a general anaesthetic in consultation with the anaesthetist or plastic surgeon.
- Local anaesthetic: you are awake
- Intravenous sedation: you are sedated
- General anaesthetic: you are unconscious
Right up to the moment you leave the Kliniek, you are supported by the anaesthetist, plastic surgeon and our team of nurses.
A Mini facelift, MACS facelift and a simple neck lift can be performed under a local anaesthetic. You don't feel anything while the procedure is being performed but, in contrast to intravenous sedation, you are completely awake, just like when you visit the dentist.
You feel no pain but you are awake.
At the Wellness Kliniek your comfort is paramount
Due to progress made in sedation techniques, invasive cosmetic procedures can now be performed without the patient being subjected to the side-effects of a general anaesthetic: Minilift, Feather Lift and liposculpture of the neck can be performed with a local anaesthetic or under intravenous sedation. An SMAS facelift, SMAS neck lift, forehead lift and eyebrow lift is performed under intravenous sedation..
With more effective pain relief a light form of anaesthesia is sufficient. Unlike traditional anaesthesia your breathing will not be controlled mechanically. You will carry on breathing and swallowing while you are asleep and you won't feel any pain. A couple of hours after the procedure you feel fit and well and do not experience any of the unpleasant side-effects of a general anaesthetic.
These modern techniques in anaesthesia mean that longer surgical procedures can now be carried out safely without any unnecessary risks. At the Wellness Kliniek we welcome these advances in anaesthesia. No more general anaesthetic for most aesthetic surgical procedures. It is especially beneficial for patients who want to combine a number of treatments in one operation.
So a facelift is often combined with another procedure such as an eyelid correction.
Intravenous sedation makes surgery safer. Another important advantage is that cosmetic procedures can be carried out during the same operation and on the same day. This means that you don't have to put your working or social life on hold repeatedly.
General anaesthetic is a form of anaesthesia in which the patient is completely anaesthetised, your muscles are relaxed and you lose consciousness. You breathe through a breathing tube inserted in your windpipe.
A facelift or a neck lift can be performed under a general anaesthetic. This is sometimes the doctor's recommendation. You may be opposed to a general anaesthetic because of the unpleasant sensation afterwards. Therefore it is good to know that our anaesthetists use special anaesthetics that prevent post-operative nausea. You can also leave the Wellness Kliniek the same day after a general anaesthetic.
The importance of being nil by mouth
If you have eaten, there is a chance that gastric fluid will enter the lungs when you are anaesthetised. Therefore, you should always be nil by mouth before having an operation. You must not eat or drink anything eight hours before surgery.
