Chin and jaw implants - prostheses
A chin or jaw implant is a prosthesis of solid silicone. The implants - prostheses are available in different shapes and sizes. There is a range of chin and jaw prostheses: the chin can be made broader (more manly) or narrower (more feminine). The decision is made according to your wishes.
Lifting or enhancing the chin with the help of a prosthesis is a simple but very effective way to balance the facial features. By inserting a chin implant the facial profile is balanced: the proportion of the nose and chin is improved; your nose appears smaller.
The jawline/chin is also given more definition with a chin implant or jaw prosthesis.
The consultation: During the consultation the surgeon will determine whether you are a suitable candidate for a chin implant. He will assess which type, shape and form of prosthesis is best for you.
The operation: Chin correction surgery with implants can be performed on an outpatient basis under intravenous sedation. After the procedure you rest for a while in one of our patient rooms. That evening you are fit and well enough to return home.
Scars: The plastic surgeon can usually insert the implant (chin prosthesis or jaw implant) via the underside of the chin or via the inside of the mouth.
Recovery and aftercare:A few weeks after the operation the chin and face may still be a little swollen. It will take a few weeks before any bruising disappears. Swelling and irregularities usually disappear about 2 to 3 weeks later. Sometimes a patient may experience a loss of sensation around the operated area. Generally this disappears by itself in the weeks following the chin operation.
Risks: Just like with other operations there is always a risk of infection, sensory disturbance and rejection of the prosthesis. Sometimes the chin implant or jaw prosthesis needs to be removed. If you experience any "pain with a fever" in the days following an operation you should contact us immediately. We are available for you 24 hours a day.
Result: The definite result is only visible a few weeks after the procedure, when all the swelling has gone. A scar on the inside of the mouth is invisible. An incision under the chin is barely noticeable.
The result of a chin implant or jaw prosthesis is permanent.
Bone-sculpture of the mandible (jawbone)
Bone-sculpture of the chin is a plastic surgical technique which gives the chin's existing bone structure a new shape. A small difference of just a few millimeters can result in a significant improvement.
Chin bone-correction is also called mentoplasty. Cosmetic surgery means that:
- a regressed chin can be brought forward.
- an oversized chin can be reduced.
- Irregularities - of the jawbone - can be smoothed out.
Chin bone-correction is a treatment which gives permanent results.
