Nipples often play an important role in general wellbeing. Imperfections, such as nipples which are inverted, stick or bulge out too much occur in men and women and can be easily corrected with aesthetic surgery.
Approximately 2% of the female population may have at least one inverted nipple. The shape and size of both nipples can also differ.
The nipple is made of two parts: the nipple and the areola. The nipple is the projected part and the areola is the dark pigmented skin that surrounds the nipple.
Inverted nipples
Abnormalities and imperfections can affect feelings of self worth and undermine self-confidence. In many cases inverted nipples are congenital. There are 3 grades of nipple inversion. Women with grade 3 nipples often struggle with infections, skin rashes and hygiene problems.
There are different forms of nipple inversion. A nipple can be misformed at birth and become inverted during puberty. Sometimes the surgeon has to detach the milk ducts to correct it. If this is the case then breastfeeding is no longer possible.
A normally formed nipple can also become inverted. The nipple can be pulled out and permanently supported with a loop. Following this operation you are still able to breastfeed. The milk ducts remain intact.
Sometimes inverted nipples can be so persistent that they re-invert after surgery. In this case a nipple prosthesis offers a solution. The prosthesis supports the nipple so that it can no longer invert. This technique is only applied as secondary surgery, after all, there is always the risk that an implant will be rejected, or become infected.

Risks associated with nipple correction - nipple reduction
As with every type of surgery, this kind also involves risks. Possible complications include: re-inversion, infection, tissue damage, bleeding and an adverse reaction to the anaesthetic. The procedure can result in visible scars, permanent pigmentation, sensitivity disorder, or nipples which differ in appearance. If nipple inversion reoccurs or there is visible assymetry then a second procedure is necessary. Some women are still able to breastfeed while others are not. Usually any complications can be corrected by one or more further operations. There is very rarely any lasting damage. Before undergoing an operation it is very important that you are well informed. Your doctor is the best source of information and will provide you with detailed information about the general risks of a particular procedure, but more importantly he can assess your individual risk.

Aftercare and recovery after nipple correction - nipple reduction
The first days followng nipple corrective surgery may be a bit painful but can be easily controlled with pain medication i.e. paracetamol. Daily activities can be resumed within 24 to 48 hours. At the Wellness Klinik we use dissolving stitches to avoid any pain caused when stitches have to be removed.
