Cosmetic surgery - Who can you trust?
Every year, hundreds of thousands of cosmetic procedures are performed worldwide. While most operations are performed to high standards by fully qualified specialists, a number are carried out by ill-prepared surgeons, in substandard hospitals or private clinics.
Patients should be fully informed on the quality of the hospital they are treated in, the qualifications and experience of those carrying out the operations, the possible risks, and after care.
If you are considering cosmetic surgery, you should check out the credentials of the clinic, the consultant who will treat you, and what you are paying for.

What to look out for
Choose your aesthetic surgeon and clinic carefully.
It is easy to check your doctor's registration on the national medical register. Watch out for expensive sounding memberships of specialist or cosmetic associations. These often give a false impression of quality.
A diploma, registration or acknowledgement alone does not guarantee the best surgery
Aesthetic surgeons always receive more in-depth specific training and have considerable experience in their area of expertise. In particular surgeons working full-time in general hospitals often lack experience and specific training in aesthetic surgery. These procedures are not priorities in state hospitals. The priorities for general hospitals, and rightly so, are to treat the sick and heal physical defects.
It is therefore important to make sure your surgeon doesn't regard aesthetic surgery as a way of supplementing his/her income.
Familiarise youself with all the details and implications of the proposed treatment and take sufficient time to consider them. Ask questions, and if necessary request a second or even a third consultation. You need to be absolutely clear about the risks and expected results.
These extra information sessions should be free of charge. You as well as your surgeon are responsible for ensuring that you are as fully informed as possible. Don't be misled by impressive folders and glossy advertisements.
A clinic which has a good reputation does not need to advertise.
Beware of agencies, beauty institutes or doctors who try to recruit patients. Make sure that your first consultation is with the actual surgeon. Only the surgeon him or herself can provide you with detailed information about the possibilities and expected results.
Choose your hospital - private clinic carefully. Standard care can vary considerably especially from one country to another.
Hospitals and private clinics generally comply with the rules and regulations put in place by government institutions. However you should demand more than this!
Your chosen clinic should have an official, internationally recognised system of quality certification.
Some private clinics do not have 24hr care facilities. Patients are often discharged and transferred to a nearby hotel. A hotel room provides no medical infrastructure and is not an ideal environment for patients who have undergone invasive surgery.
Your chosen clinic should have overnight facilities with medical supervision.
Preferably your cosmetic surgery should not be performed in facilities - operating theatres, departments- which are also used for treating sick patients with infections.
Bacterial cross infection can lead to serious problems.
Also check who is liable for the cost if further care or corrective treatment is necessary. With hindsight, the cheaper option often turns out to be more expensive in the long term.
The price of your procedure should be all-inclusive.
Prices should be reasonable. Ridiculously expensive prices are no guarantee of quality, and dirt cheap prices even less so. Check that savings are not made on the materials used and be clear about the quality certificate and terms of guarantee for your chosen clinic.
Don't disregard the method of sedation. As a rule intravenous sedation is safer that a general anaesthetic.
Especially for people who are overweight, older and with longer operations a general anaesthetic is possibly more dangerous than the surgery itself. Duty bound, aesthetic surgeons will in these cases prefer to use intravenous sedation methods to significantly reduce any risks
Registered consultantsOur consultants are fully trained in general surgery and even more specifically in their specialised area of aesthetic surgery. They are members of the Belgian and often also of International Register(s) of surgeons, doctors or dentists. Their qualifications - diplomas are recognised by all EU member states.
The Wellness Kliniek has it all!
The Wellness Kliniek guarantees that it meets all of these conditions ensuring an effective and safe operation.
Specifically trained and experienced specialistsOur consultants are carefully selected. They are not permitted to hold a full-time post in a general hospital and must be passionate about and dedicated to aesthetics in their field. They are experienced and have benefited from sound and formal training in their aesthetic specialised area.
Guarantee, additional consultations and aftercareOur prices include: admission, the hospital bill, doctorís fees, the cost of the anaesthetic and all additional consultations in the Wellness Kliniek. The materials and implants used are guaranteed separately by the supplier. The fees and clinical costs for further procedures in the Wellness Kliniek, to deal with complications or further enhance results, are included in the initial cost of your operation. In exceptional cases when complications need to be treated in a general hospital the patient needs to call on his/her own insurance. We consider it to be extremely important for you to be able to balance the risks and the expected results as well as possible. This is why you are always entitled to free preoperative consultations.
ISO 9001 / EN 15224 Quality Guarantee for medical & surgical proceduresIn the Wellness Kliniek each & every treatment, all materials and infrastructure is controlled for safety and effectiveness, with the necessary scientific and legal back up. This ensures not only a safe clinical environment but also a formal quality control of the treatments performed. The ISO 9001 / EN 15224 Quality Certificate guarantees quality control.
No advertising, No agencies, or doctors on commissionThe Wellness Kliniek doesnít believe in misleading brochures and story telling. Cosmetic treatments are medical procedures which carry risks. It is important that you are well-informed in advance about the possibilities and expected results. This information can only be provided by the doctor who will be treating you. In the Wellness Kliniek every initial consultation is with the doctor himself. We donít advertise, nor do we want to recommend cosmetic surgery to you. We do want to inform you properly about the possibilities and side-effects.
No mixing with infected patients, no hotel rooms.Cross-infection with hospital bacteria is a well known cause of disease and death. This is why healthy aesthetics patients are preferably not treated in the same operating theatres or departments as patients with infections. It is also best to keep medical and paramedical staff separate. No sick patients are treated in the Wellness Kliniek. We have four operating theatres available for aesthetic surgery.
Reasonable FeesIn the Wellness Kliniek you know exactly what you are paying for. Our services are performed to the highest European standards. The medical and paramedical staff are specifically trained and are constantly subject to quality controls. The facility comes under a controlled and internationally recognised quality system with ISO certificates, as are all the treatment methods, materials and technology.
No general anaesthetic necessaryDue to progress made in sedation techniques invasive cosmetic procedures can now be performed without a general anaesthetic. With more effective pain relief a light form of anaesthesia is sufficient to put you to sleep during your operation. Unlike traditional anaesthesia you will not be given muscle relaxing medication and your breathing will not be controlled by a machine. You will breathe for yourself and swallow while you are asleep, feeling no pain. A couple of hours after the procedure you feel fine and are spared the sometimes unpleasant side-effects of a general anaesthetic.
Quality is highly valued by us: we strive for excellence. To guarantee optimal safety and quality, the Wellness Kliniek has adopted the ISO quality system. Our care is evaluated by our patients through patient satisfaction research. We aim for 100 % patient-satisfaction.
