With aging, following pregnancy or after considerable weightloss your breasts can lose their firmness. Breast muscle exercises, massages or creams do not help. Surgical correction can lift droopy or sagging breasts.

A breast lift operation requires a personal approach, particularly with regards to the size you want to have after the procedure. Sometimes excess skin is removed and the nipple is moved. Sometimes inserting breast implants has the desired effect. The surgeon will discuss the best course of action with you.

Depending on the type of operation, you are admitted for one or two days. Sometimes the procedure is performed on an outpatient basis so that you can go home on the same day. The procedure takes two to three hours and is performed under intravenous sedation.

• Breast lift: removal of excess skin

If your breasts are saggy because of excess skin then a breast lift can have the desired effect. The existing breast tissue remains intact. The mammary gland is lifted and stitched to the breast muscle higher up. Excess skin is removed.Usually the nipple is moved. With this type of breast lift the surgeon normally makes two incisions. The first incision is made around the areola, the second runs from the areola to the breast fold. With very large, sagging breasts it may be necessay to make a third incision (in the breast fold) to achieve the best results.

• Breast firming using implants

If the volume of the breast gland is insufficient, the areola is not too low and your skin is elastic then you are suitable for a simple breast enlargement with implants. No skin is removed. The operation has a lifting effect from the inserted implants. The small scars after the operaion are barely visible.

• Droopy nipples

If the nipple is seriously reduced then only the aesthetic expectation is addressed by replacing the nipple leaving a small scar which runs around the nipple and down towards the breast fold, as with breast reduction surgery. Elongated nipples, enlarged or irregular nipples can be improved at the same time.

• Breast lift with implants

In addition to a breast lift a breast prosthesis can be inserted. Following a breast lift the breast volume generally seems larger, because the mammary gland has been restitched in the correct position. By removing the loose, excess skin and lifting the mammary gland your breasts are firmer. If you desire a larger breast then we advise you to have a breast lift with implants. 

Breast lift with internal bra

It may sometimes be necessary to attach an internal net - an internal bra- to support your breasts and prevent further sagging. The internal bra is a new cosmetic surgical technique for breast lifting and breast firming. The internal bra is a bra which is not worn on your skin but underneath your skin. This completely tailor-made bra is made of synthetic material, its function is the same as any other bra, to firm and support the breasts so that they do not sag and will feel firmer. The internally attached support helps to firm your saggy breasts and also enlarges them somewhat though this is not a breast enlargement technique.

If the nipple is moved then feeling and the reaction of the nipples can be reduced temporarily. Usually this returns to normal a few weeks or months later.

Pemanent loss of feeling in the nipple can occur as well as impaired blood flow which can lead to partial or total loss of the nipple. Smoking may lead to this. This can be avoided if you stop smoking at least three weeks before your operation and for 3 weeks afterwards. Permanent loss of feeling and blood flow impairment are rare. Read more.

General anaesthetic or intravenous sedation?

• A general anaesthetic is not necessary! So there are also no side-effects from a traditional anaesthetic!

Due to progress made in sedation techniques, cosmetic procedures, including breast surgery, can now be performed without the patient being subjected to the side-effects of a general anaesthetic.
With more effective pain relief a light form of anaesthesia is sufficient. Unlike traditional anaesthesia a tube will not be inserted via your throat to control your breathing mechanically. You will not be given any muscle relaxing medication. 

• Intravenous sedation: you will breathe for yourself and swallow while you are asleep, feeling no pain.

As a rule a couple of hours after the procedure you feel fine and are spared the sometimes unpleasant side-effects of a general anaesthetic. This has made cosmetic surgery safer. Combined procedures can also be performed safely. For example it is now possible to combine a breast lift with an eyelid correction.

Aftercare and recovery

After the operation your breasts may be bound tight. With a breast lift, drains may be inserted under your skin to drain off any excess liquid from the wound.

These fine tubes are removed after two or three days. The stitches are removed a week or two after the operation, depending on which breast firming procedure was performed.

We usually advise you to wear a bra (but not an underwired one!) day and night for the first few weeks following your operation.

After a week you can normally resume most of your daily activities. It is best to wait about 3 weeks before resuming any heavy work.

If your surgeon has prescribed any special vitamins or scar oil don't forget to use them. They wll help speed up the healing process.
