What is Botox?
Botox is the brand name for Botulinum toxin, a protein which is produced by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum.
Botox injections do not include any bacteria, just the toxin protein.
The medical effects of Botox are:
- Botox blocks the signals from the nerves to the muscles.
- This then stops the muscle from working.
- Botox blocks the nerves which activate the glands.
- This is why the glands stop working (eg the sweat glands).

Risks and side-effects
Side-effects of Botox are extremely rare: Skin rash, itching, headache and flu symptoms, a slight drooping eyelid - ptosis. These side-effects seldom occur and are temporary. Small bleeds under the skin - bruises - around the injected area can occur, especially in people who take blood thinning medication or aspirin. Botox is injected into the muscles using an extremely fine needle. The injections do not usually cause any pain. The intake consultation with the treatment lasts about 20 minutes. You can them resume your daily routine.

The number of Botox product units which are injected are determined by the degree of wrinkle relaxation you require or desire. The stronger your muscles the more Botox units you will need to achieve smooth skin.
Most people use between 12 and 25 Botox units per zone.
Botox treatment is cheaper if more patients are treated on the same day.
