Abdominoplasty - Tummy Tuck

Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

When abdominal muscles have weakened and fat has accumulated in the abdominal area, abdominoplasty (a tummy tuck) can help you tighten those muscles again. An abdominal muscle correction procedure will make your abs look better and more toned. This is a commonly requested procedure at Wellness Kliniek, both by men and women.

What is abdominoplasty?

Abdominoplasty is also known as sagging lower abdomen correction, abdominal wall correction, or panniculectomy, and is popularly known as a tummy tuck. It is a procedure where the skin is made thinner and firmer by removing excess skin and fat. Muscles are retightened to firm up the abdominal wall. In the following, we will go into the different types of abdominoplasty. There is, for example, the full tummy tuck, but also the mini tummy tuck and Fleur-de-Lis abdominoplasty.

Curious about results we have achieved so far? Be sure to take a look at our abdominoplasty before and after pictures page to get a good idea of what we can do. Do bear in mind, however, that results may differ from person to person. To find out what we can do for you, simply book a no-obligation consultation.

Abdominoplasty is an option for both women and men. This page focuses specifically on women. For men who are interested in a tummy tuck, we have a special abdominoplasty for men page.

Mini Tummy Tuck

With a mini tummy tuck or mini abdominoplasty, the surgeon will remove excess skin below the belly button, i.e. from the lower abdomen. The incision will normally be hidden below the bikini line. The abdominal muscles below the belly button can also be tightened. There is also the option to remove excess fat from the lower abdomen during a mini tummy tuck.

Full tummy tuck

This procedure sees the surgeon remove excess skin and fat tissue from the upper and lower abdomen. Weak abdominal muscles are tightened to firm up your abdominal wall. If necessary, your belly button will be moved for a more natural look.

Fleur-de-Lis abdominoplasty

If you have excess skin or fat tissue in your abdomen, Fleur-de-Lis abdominoplasty is an option you could consider. Like with a mini tummy tuck, the surgeon will make a horizontal incision just above the pubic area, i.e. below the bikini line. A second vertical incision will run from the pubic hair line to the rib cage. This incision will be stitched in a reversed T-shape.

Fleur-de-Lis abdominoplasty almost always involves removal and reattachment of the belly button, meaning that this procure will also leave a scar around the belly button.

Body Lift

Another option is to correct your abdomen and buttocks in one single procedure. Torsoplasty is a procedure where the surgeon makes an incision that goes all the way around the body. The exact location of the incision depends on your body and on what you want out of the procedure. The scar will normally run from hip to hip.

Abdominoplasty at the hospital or at a private clinic?

Not sure about whether to have your tummy tuck at a hospital or at a private clinic? The hospital is often the chosen option in case of a medical need, such as when a tummy tuck is necessary because of serious infections in skin creases, walking difficulty, or disfigurement in the abdominal wall. In such cases, a tummy tuck may be covered by your health insurance.

In most cases, however, people have a tummy tuck for aesthetic reasons. When the objective is a cosmetic improvement, the procedure is generally not covered (except with certain additional health insurance packages). In that case, you can go to a private clinic such as Wellness Kliniek.

Who is abdominoplasty intended for?

If you have a lot of excess fat around your waist but are otherwise in good mental and physical health, you are a candidate for abdominoplasty. Common reasons for having a tummy tuck:

  • Abdominoplasty after pregnancy: a tummy tuck is a great option for women who have been left with stretched skin and loose muscles due to childbirth.
  • Abdominoplasty after weight loss: when losing weight, the skin does generally not return to its original tautness. That is where abdominoplasty comes in.
  • Abdominoplasty in relation to old age: the ageing process is unstoppable and leads to loose and thickened skin around the abdomen. This can also be a reason to have a tummy tuck.

However, if you are planning on losing quite a bit of weight, it is better to put off having a tummy tuck for now. If you are overweight, it is better to lose weight first. And with a very high BMI (often higher than 34), a tummy tuck is not (yet) a good option for you because it increases the risk of infections and bleeding after the surgery. If you are planning on getting pregnant, it is also best to wait.

The benefits and possibilities of a tummy tuck differ from person to person. We advise you to go over it in detail with your doctors at Wellness Kliniek. You can book a no-obligation consultation for that.

Abdominoplasty: the procedure

Abdominal muscles can be corrected subcutaneously without removing any skin. The surgeon will then use extremely thin instruments below the skin through an incision in the pubic area. This way, the surgeon can tighten up weakened muscles below the skin. It will leave only minor scars and deliver great-looking abs.

The skin normally hangs off the lower abdomen or the whole abdomen. Sometimes there are also stretch marks visible. If so, it is better to also remove some excess skin to get the best possible result.

What kind of abdominoplasty would be the best option in your case depends entirely on your body. Fortunately, you won’t have to make this choice all on your own, as your surgeon will go over your options with you in great detail during a consultation.

An abdominal wall correction procedure will normally take around two hours and is done under general anaesthesia. After the surgery, an abdominal dressing will be applied and you will spend the night at Wellness Kliniek.

What to expect?

Tummy tucks or abdominal wall corrections deliver stunning results in our patients. In most cases, these results last for a long time. However, getting pregnant or gaining weight after a tummy tuck may ultimately alter the result.

If your body meets the conditional guidelines, your expectations are realistic, you understand that there will be permanent (albeit limited) scarring, and that you will have to take some time to recover after the surgery, abdominoplasty is the perfect solution to your problem.

It takes between two to six weeks to recover after a tummy tuck. During this recovery period, it is important that you refrain from any heavy physical work. Exercise should also be avoided in the early stages after a tummy tuck.

Does your abdomen feel numb or too tight after a tummy tuck? This, too, will diminish after around six weeks. Apart from that, you may also experience bruises and swollen skin. This bruising sensation normally goes away after a few days.

Guidelines for post-abdominoplasty activities

The guidelines with respect to (heavy) physical work and exercise depend on what procedure you had and will be discussed with you in detail beforehand by the consulting physician. Here at Wellness Kliniek, we are also highly committed to providing intensive aftercare. If you have any questions about guidelines for post-surgery activities, feel free to ask.

What does abdominoplasty cost?

Here at Wellness Kliniek, we aim to charge transparent prices. The prices are different for each type of abdominoplasty and supplement. For a list of our current prices, take a look at our abdominoplasty prices page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there different types of tummy tucks?
Yes there are. The differents types are a mini tummy tuck, a full tummy tuck, a fleur de lis tummy tuck and a lower body lift. Each tummy tuck procedure is extremely individual and a thorough assessment is necessary to achieve the most beautiful, permanent results. During the consultation the surgeon will determine which is the best technique for you and exactly what you can expect.
How long does tummy tuck surgery take?
This depends on the type of tummy tuck surgery that will be most suitable for you. On average, a mini tummy tuck will take anywhere from 1 to 2 hours. A full tummy tuck may take 2 to 2 ½ hours. You will be under general anaesthetic during this time. Patients will be required an overnight stay, but this will be discussed with your surgeon during the consultation stage.
What is the recovery time? When can I go back to work?
As with most major surgeries, you should allow yourself an adequate amount of recovery time. Most patients will need to rest for 2 to 4 weeks afterwards, this is shorter if you have only had a mini tummy tuck, usually 1 to 2 weeks. It is advised to take at least one week off from work. All patients are invited for a free follow up consult.
What is a Mommy Makeover?
A Mommy Makeover treats the tummy and the breasts, precisely the problem areas that many mothers have to cope with. The treatments are performed simultaneously, during a single operation. The advantage of combined treatment is that you are not out of action any longer than necessary.
Is a Mommy makeover suitable for me?
A Mommy Makeover is suitable for all mothers, young and old. It is important that you are in good health. A Mommy Makeover gives the best result if you are at your target weight before the operation. If you are too fat, it is best to lose weight first. If you are overweight, you run the risk of complications such as infection, poor wound healing and post-operative bleeding. Your BMI (Body Mass Index) must never be higher than 30.
