| Breast enlargements: placing breast implants is so popular because it has helped a lot of young women. The breast enlargement is one of the plastic surgical operations that increases the body image of the woman and therefore has a very positive psychological influence.
A breast enlargement with implants can be done as an outpatient procedure. This means you come to the Wellness Clinic in the mornings, have your surgery, recover, and go home at night. A breast enlarging operation takes about 1 hour.
GENERAL ANESTHETIC OR SEDATION?
A breast enlargement is done under sedation.
Progress in sedation techniques has helped make extensive cosmetic procedures possible while avoiding the side effects of the traditional general anesthesia. With the use of more efficient pain medications, only a light form of sedation is required rather than a general anesthetic.
Contrary to traditional anesthetic, where a tube is inserted in the throat and connected to a breathing apparatus, you actually breathe on your own.
During the operation you breathe and swallow independently while asleep and yet you don’t feel pain.
Sedation makes the surgery safer. A few hours after the procedure you feel fine and have been spared the side effects and complications of general anesthesia.
CHOICE OF IMPLANTS
The choice of prosthesis determines the surgical technique performed. Your personal preference and your body type also play a role while determining the operation technique. In the Wellness Clinic we only implant the highest qualitative implants. The quality, the volume and the form of the implant partly determine the final result.
At the intake consultation you will determine with the surgeon which volume and form provide you with the best results.
If you would like to get used to your future cup volume, you can use an external cup size, a bag filled with water, that you temporarily wear in your bra.
There are 3 types of implants:
- Silicon Fixed Gel breast implants with silicon shell: available in different shapes,
- Salt-water (saline-solution) filled breast implants with silicon shell,
- Hydro-gel breast implants with silicon shell.
The fixed silicon gel filled prostheses
Modern fixed silicon implants, of good quality, with a rough surface, are very resistant to leakage and capsule creation.
It used to be normal to insert the breast implants through a big incision (up to 7 cm!) in the fold under the breast with an incision in the armpit or in the skin around the nipple area. These scars fade in time, but a thin white line will always be visible.
Because of a more modern operation technique these implants can now also be inserted with a special injection system, through a small incision of about 3 cm in the nipple area. A scar in the pigmented skin of the nipple area provides the best result in the long run.
The big advantage of a small incision in the nipple area is that the operation is barely visible a few months after the operation!
Silicon implants can be placed above or under the muscle. Usually a combined pocket, between the breast muscle and the gland tissue, provides the best result.
Silicon filled prostheses provides the breast a beautiful shape and feel soft and flexible.
In the Wellness Clinic we only use qualitatively high brands: Monobloc Silicon, Sebbin Silicon and McGhan Silicon. The shape of the implant, high-, medium-, and low profile, round, anatomic or drop-shaped can best be determined together with the surgeon. The manufacturers of breast implants provide a guarantee of 10 years on all implants: silicons, hydrogels, salt-water filled prostheses. The guarantee means that in case of leakage the manufacturer provides 2 free replacement prostheses. The Wellness Kliniek guarantees free replacing surgery for silicon filled breast implants during this period.
The old operation technique of an incision in the fold under the breast, in the armpit or around the nipple area is barely used in the Wellness Clinic.
The salt water prothesis
The salt-water implant can best be inserted via an incision in the nipple area or through the navel.
Endoscope makes it possible to insert inflatable implants through a small incision (1-2 cm) that are then filled with a special saline solution (physiological serum). This serum is completely harmless and is passed out of the body in case of any leakage. The implants can be placed before as well as behind the breast muscle. They move supple and feel natural.
Breast enlargement via the navel:
1. A fine surgical instrument is brought into the navel
through a small incision. |

and filled. |
4. The incision is stitched leaving the
scar hidden in the navel. |
The hydro-gel implant
The hydro-gel breast implant consists of a silicon-shell with a filling of carboxyl methylcellulose 3,7% and physiological serum 96,3%.
The prosthesis is pre-filled and can therefore not be inserted via the navel. This implant can, just like the silicon implants, best be inserted via a small incision in the nipple area, with the implant injection system.
The hydro-gel prosthesis allows the breast to be x-rayed just like the salt-water prosthesis. If the prosthesis should leak, the body will immediately pass out the harmless fluid in a natural way.
Hydro-gel implants give a higher chance on leakage because the prosthesis is likely to attract some body fluids.
If you choose hydro-gel prosthesis, the Monobloc Hydro-gel implant is the most suitable.
can i choose my future bra size?
Yes. You inform the surgeon of your wishes. He then determines the shape of the implant and calculates the necessary volume enlargement.
are silicon implants safe?
There is no scientific evidence that silicon causes breast cancer, arthritis or immune deficiencies.
When the prostheses were still filled with liquid silicon gel this used to happen. In case of a tear in the shell of the implant the gel could leak out and spread out through the body.
Fortunately this is no longer the case: Modern silicon implants have a firm silicon casing and are filled with a fixed silicon mass that doesn’t spread through the body in case of a tear.
does it happen that the implants have to be removed?
In some cases, the body forms a hard capsule around the implant: The breasts become hard and are painful. Usually the surgeon can remove this capsule under sedation. Unfortunately this sometimes damages the implants and they have to be replaced. Implants with a rough surface have a smaller chance of capsule creation.
The body can also refuse to accept and reject the implants.
Rejection and encapsulation is rare. Normally, complications do not occur and you will most likely experience many years of pleasure from your implants.
how long can the implants stay in?
Hundreds of women have had the original implants for over 20 years. If you take into account that the quality of the current implants has improved a lot, you can assume that a large part of the patients will have pleasure of the original procedure for a very long time, sometimes for a life time.
In the Wellness Clinic we only use those implants with the strongest possible casings according to the CE-tests.
Prostheses with a known weaker casing are not used, not even if the patient insists on a cheaper alternative.
are yearly check-ups necessary?
No. Breast prostheses of high quality reduce the chance of complications. Consequently, unless advised differently by the surgeon, a routine yearly check-up of your breast enlargement is not necessary.
If you are going to have a mammography, don’t forget to mention that you have breast implants.
can i still breast feed after a breast enlargement?
Yes. After a breast enlargement you are still capable to breast feed.
post-operative recovery
It takes a few days for the implants to settle. It is possible that you will experience muscular pain in the chest and back area; the breasts may also feel tense.
In some cases we recommend to wear a breast band or firm bra during 3-10 days.
Basically the recovery period is pretty short. We recommend that you rest the first week after surgery and that you take it easy in the weeks after. After 3 weeks you can resume all activities, even heavy sport activities.
If the surgeon has prescribed you special vitamins to take to improve the recovery, don’t forget to take these.
