BOTOX® OR DYSPORT®:  WRINKLES 

Expression wrinkles are mainly a result of gravity but also of certain facial expressions. 

• They appear most frequently: 
• Between the eyebrows (from frowning)
• On the forehead
• Around the eyes (crow’s feet from laughing)

The wrinkles are the result of excessive muscle contraction

Botox injections are used to diminish fine lines and wrinkles.  The overall effect of Botox is a relaxed smooth appearance resulting in a patient that looks happier and less angry or tiers.

The treatment may last 3 to 9 months until the toxins begin to wear off. You can repeat the treatment - with each round the effects last longer. Even younger people with firm skin, but who have noticeable forehead wrinkles or frowns can benefit from the Botox injections.

Botox is mainly effective for the upper part of the face;
• Forehead wrinkles = horizontal wrinkles on the forehead
• Glabellas = frown wrinkles; vertical wrinkles between the eyebrows
• Crow’s-feet = wrinkles from smiling around the eyes

WHat is BOTOX®?

Botox is Botuline toxin, a protein made by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. Botox injections do not contain the bacteria but only the toxin protein.

Botuline toxin as medicine has two effects:

• A blocking action on the nerves to the muscles after which the muscle activity diminishes.
• A blocking action on the nerves activating sweat glands.

IS BOTOX NOT DANGEROUS ?

Botox has been safely used since 1975 .It has been extensively tested and is used worldwide for the following indications:

• Ophthalmology: strabismus or cross eyed patients and blepharospasm.
• Orthopedic medicine: spastic paralysis.
• Neurology: muscle spasm, migraine.
• Internal medicine: esophagus spasm.
• Gynecology: vaginism
• Urology: incontinence from an overactive bladder.
• Esthetic medicine: Anti wrinkle treatment since 1989
• Hyper-hydrosis armpits

HOW DOES BOTOX® WORK?

Botox injections work by binding to nerve endings and preventing the release of chemical transmitters that activate muscles. Botox affects the ability of the muscle to move.

Result of the injections is that the expression wrinkles caused by contraction of the muscle, disappear.

WHY TREAT WRINKLES WITH BOTOX®?

People who frown a lot often look tired or angry. After a while you create a real wrinkle, even when you relax your muscles.

DOES BOTOX WORK FOR EVERYBODY?

Not everybody reacts the same way on the injections.

After an extensive study in Canada it appeared that 90% of the patients seemed very happy after the treatment.

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE?

Men and women mainly between the ages of 30 to 65 years.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS ?

Side effects are itchiness, a headache or a rash. Also rare is eyelid droop (ptosis).These side effects are only temporarily. Temporary bruising can occur. To reduce the risk on bruising you should stop taking any blood thinning medication such as aspirin, marcoumar, gingko, biloba, plavix….

Also you can take arnica one week before your treatment. Right after your treatment you will notice a small bump which disappears fast.

ARE THERE ANY CONTRA INDICATIONS ?

• Pregnant or nursing women
• Neurological diseases:   
  Myasthenia gravis
  Lambert-Eaton syndrome
• Certain medications:
  Amino glycoside antibiotics
  Calcium blocking medication

WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM THE TREATMENT?

Botox is a very simple, 20-minute procedure. It is injected with a tiny needle.
Discomfort is usually minimal and brief.
You may resume normal daily activity immediately.

WHEN DO I SEE AND RESULT AND FOR HOW LONG?

You may see a marked improvement within 3 to 5 days. Improvement may continue for as long as two weeks. After 3 to 4 months the toxins start to wear off, the mimic muscles resume their activity and the expression wrinkles start to show again.

After a couple of rounds of treatment you may find that the results last longer (6 to 9 months).

HOW OFTEN IS THE TREATMENT RECOMMENDED ?

You can receive injections with Botox up to every 4 to 6 months in order to help you maintain the results. It is not recommended to proceed any sooner: risk for antibodies to form and muscle-atrophy is possible.
